I. THE SHAP CONFERENCE 16-19 FEBRUARY, SHAP WELLS HOTEL, CUMBRIA UK

The weekend at Shap has been a regular fixture for students at the Newcastle
University Centre for Lifelong Learning for over twenty years. More recently,
the weekend has been run in conjuction with the Philosophical Society of
England.

I first came to Shap in 1998 to read a paper on 'The Ethics of Dialogue'. It
was a memorable experience. The discussions were lively but always friendly and
courteous. The magnificent scenery of the Cumbrian fells made a perfect backdrop
to our mental explorations, as well as giving a great opportunity for
philosophical walks. This year, I am pleased to have been invited back to read
a paper on 'Truth and Subjective Knowledge'.

The title of this year's conference is 'The Place of Mind in Nature'. Michael
Bavidge, Deputy Head of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, writes:

"Most contemporary philosophers aim for a naturalistic theory of mind but it
still remains elusive. The three papers, from different perspectives, seek to
locate the mind non-reductively within the natural world. The conference aims
to immerse the participants, however slight their previous experience of
philosophy, in intensive reflection and discussion."

II. INTERNET CONFERENCE ON 'THE USE AND VALUE OF PHILOSOPHY': UPDATE

Many thanks to all those who responded to issue 1 of Pathways News, and the
invitation to Pathways and Diploma students participate in the internet
philosophy conference on 'The Use and Value of Philosophy' hosted at the
conferencing server run by Martin Gough at the Institute of Education,
University of London.

The first batch of usernames and passwords for 'The Use and Value of
Philosophy' will soon be on their way. If you have not requested your username/
password yet there is still plenty of opportunity to do so. The conference will
be on-going, so you can jump aboard at any time!
