EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION

In Issue 80 of Philosophy for Business, Umaru Zubairu's article
'Corporate Philanthropy amongst SMEs: A Divine Command Theory
Perspective' discusses corporate philanthropy of small and medium
sized enterprises (SMEs) from an Islamic perspective. The author
provides an interesting answer to each of the following questions:
why give? what to give? how to give? and who to give to? [...]

I. 'C0RPORATE PHILANTROPY AMONGST SMEs: A DIVINE COMMAND THEORY
PERSPECTIVE' BY UMARU ZUBAIRU

Over the last three decades, the expected role of business in society
has grown tremendously, with businesses now required to cater for the
interests of several stakeholders, from employees to consumers, from
shareholders to law makers, and even the environment as well. An
important component of a company's CSR is Corporate Philanthropy. The
majority of scholarship on corporate philanthropy has focused on the
charitable activities of large corporations. There has been very
little scholarship on enhancing our understanding about the
engagement of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in corporate
philanthropy, despite the fact the they constitute the bulk of
business enterprises worldwide [..]

II. 'THE RELATIONS BETWEEN ETHICS AND ECONOMICS: A COMPARATIVE
ANALYSIS BETWEEN AYRES' AND WEBER'S PERSPECTIVES' BY NURIA TOLEDANO
AND CRISPEN KARANDA

Sider points out, "As the Lord of history, God works now - with and
through human co-workers- to create more wholesome economies that
respect and nurture the dignity and worth of every human being". This
means, in some way, that economics and ethics should be walking hand
in hand. However, the current situation seems to show a very
different picture. In fact, the common notions of economic
development, with their logic about the increase of wealth, sometimes
at any cost, often generate a break between economics and ethics. The
recent global economic crisis is an example of this break, where many
have been able to observe, through different business practices, how
damaged the moral values are in great part of our societies [...]

III. 'PLATO AS A PHILOSOPHY SALESMAN IN THE PHAEDO' BY MARLON
JESSPHER B. DE VERA

In this paper, I attempt to argue that Plato's main intent in the
Phaedo is not to build and present an argument for the immortality of
the soul, but rather to elevate, promote, and in a sense "sell"
philosophy as the highest pursuit of humanity. As an initial support
for this argument, it is worth emphasizing that the Phaedo presents
in a somewhat dramatic manner how Socrates spent the last day of his
life philosophizing with his students. Thus, it can be said that the
setting of the Phaedo in itself already sets an appropriate backdrop
against which philosophy can be promoted as the ultimate human
endeavour that is worth undertaking [...]
